657 pages, 914 photographs and 378 drawings

Avtorji besedil so Vedran Mimica, Maroje Mrduljaš, Vladimir Mattioni, Helena Paver Njirić, Feđa Vukić, Nikola Polak, Dafne Berc in Luciano Basauri.

Contemporary Croatian Architecture: Testing Reality is the first systematic overview of contemporary Croatian architecture between 1990 and 2007. It contains some 100 architectural projects that marked the Croatian architecture in the past seventeen years. The book includes articles by Vedran Mimica, Maroje Mrduljaš, Vladimir Mattioni, Helena Paver Njirić, Feđa Vukić, Nikola Polak, Dafne Berc and Luciano Basauri. Kenneth Frampton, architecture theoretician from the US is a guest critic in the book. The book is bilingual (Croatian and English). An exhibition accompanying the book is also in preparation.

Contemporary Croatian Architecture: Testing Reality is at the same time a retrospective and critique of the past seventeen years of contemporary Croatian architecture, analyzing the relation between the architectural production and the wider social context. The radical economic and political changes that took place in Croatia in the 1990s had a strong influence on the architecture and building in general. The Croatian architects tried to adapt to the new context they were not prepared for, while the building boom increased the public's interest in architecture.

Introduction to the book in form of a timeline, compiled by Maroje Mrduljaš and Ana Šilović, lists the most important events between 1991 and 2006, outlining the Croatian and international context.

Branimirja Medića in Pera Puljiza, Zoka Zolo in Lea Modrčina.

In text Croatian Architecture, Inventing Reality , Vedran Mimica describes the transition context in which the contemporary Croatian architecture was created, and speaks critically about the architectural situation in Croatia. He mentions the following people as the most important architects who contributed to the creation of the authentic architectural culture that can participate in the European cultural exchange on an equal footing: Saša Randić and Idis Turato, Helena Paver Njirić and Hrvoje Njirić, Veljko Oluić and Tonči Žarnić, Goran Rako and Bojan Radonić, Vinko Penezić and Krešimir Rogina, and the new generation represented by studio 3LHD, Studio UP, Produkcija 004. He also mentions the Croatian architectural emigration, like Branimir Medić and Pero Puljiz, Zoka Zola and Leo Modrčin.

Prispevek Testiranje stvarnosti Maroja Mrduljaša predstavlja ogrodje cele knjige.

Testing Reality by Maroje Mrduljaš is the backbone of the entire book. As he says in the introduction: "Texts about contemporary Croatian architecture gathered under the title Testing of reality are based on the view that social circumstances significantly influence the architectural practice in which social reality is reflected as a feedback. This relation produces phenomena that describe the context in which the architectural practice is created, as well as the cultural, social, utilitarian and other effects of the architecture on social reality." The presented architectural projects are considered as "a part of specific phenomena that are also a part of the social reality and tendencies within the architectural discipline itself." The seven specific phenomena used in grouping and analyzing the contemporary Croatian production are: Ideas Exchange, Investments in future, Shapes of Collective Identity, Free Market Arcadia, Collective housing - Semiutopian Life, Schöner Wohnen and Café Croatia.

Ameriški arhitekturni teoretik in kritik Kenneth Frampton v besedilu Med monumentalnim in dematerializacijo predstavi lastno kritično pojmovanje sodobne hrvaške arhitekture. Frampton izpostavi družinsko hišo na Pantovčaku v Zagrebu (Lenko Pleština), stavbo POS-a v Krapinskih Toplicah (Iva Letilović in Morana Vlahović), stavbo POS-a na Cresu (studio capsula), Morske orgle v Zadru (Nikola Bašić).

Kenneth Frampton, the architectural theoretician and critic from the US, presents his own critical reading of the contemporary Croatian architecture in Between Monumentality and Immaterial. He points out the family house in Pantovčak district in Zagreb (Lenko Pleština), POS building in Krapinske Toplice (Iva Letilović and Morana Vlahović), POS building on the island of Cres (studio capsula), Sea Organ in Zadar (Nikola Bašić).
What follows are the 197 pages with a catalogue of select architectural projects. According to the book's editors, Maroje Mrduljaš, Vedran Mimica and Andrija Rusan the selection represents the finest of the contemporary Croatian architecture in Croatia. The criteria for selection was quality and success with which a project responds to the programmatic, sociologic or economic context, i.e. how successfully the architecture responds to the tasks set within the very discipline and society.

Vladimir Mattioni v prispevku Trajno začasno piše o spremembah v načrtovanju mest, ki so nastopile v devetdesetih, in o zmanjšani moči vpliva urbanih načrtovalcev.

In Permanently Temporary, Vladimir Mattioni speaks about the changes in town planning in the 1990s, and a decreased influence of the urban planners. On one hand, he singles out the advanced explorations in urban planning that took place in the 1990s, while on the other hand he points out that the spatial relations in the transition are ruled by the capital.

Helena Paver Njirić's Diary was kept during her work on the POS building project in Rovinj. In the introduction, Andrija Rusan says: ''Only after one reads Helena Paver Njirić's diary, especially those who are not a part of the Croatian construction reality, will you be able to comprehend the difficulty of the task of building architecture in Croatia - that is, if you believe this true to life diary''

Dafne Berc and Luciano Basauri in the text Mind the Gap write about the young Croatian architectural scene, detect the causes for its lack of preparedness for the architectural reality after they graduate, and consider the options that could contribute to the better architectural future.

In Hybrid Identities Feđa Vukić gives a cultural overview of the architectural production in Croatia that "functions between presence and absence, the old and the new, and with the marked aspects of the personalization and popularization of architecture".
Nikola Polak's A Context That Lasts is an overview of 20th century Croatian architecture. The high achievements in the contemporary architectural tradition throughout the 20th century makes for a rich heritage that is an equally worth part of the European architectural heritage. It can also be a creative impetus to the contemporary architectural production.
