Kada sam dobio poziv da predstavim svoje viđenje srednjoeuropskog arhitektonskog identiteta, ponovo sam pročitao tekst Milana Kundere “Tragedija srednje Europe”. Kundera govori o potresnim dimenzijama tragedije koja je pogodila narode istočnoeuropskih država, koje su poslije Drugog svjetskog rata bile nasilno odsječene od ostale Europe. Desecima i desecima milijuna ljudi na taj su način bili podrezani povijesni korijeni, a to drugim riječima znači da su izgubili svoj identitet, svoje civilizacijsko biće. Za Kunderu je život bez identiteta tragičan.

When I received the invitation to present my views on the Central European architectural identity, I re-read Milan Kundera’s text “The Tragedy of Central Europe”. Kundera speaks of the upsetting dimensions of the tragedy which struck the nations of Eastern Europe, which were forcefully detached from the rest of Europe after World War II. Historical roots were undercut for tens of millions of people in this way, meaning that they lost their identity, their civilizational being. According to Kundera, a life without identity is tragic.
