Moderna arhitektura in njena naslednica danes, sodobna brazilska arhitektura, izhajata iz kompleksnih zgodovinsko-kulturnih procesov, v katerih so tako brazilski kot priseljeni arhitekti pripomogli k preseganju uveljavljenih vzorov in norm, ki so se ali prenašale iz Evrope ali bile del dediščine staroselskih indijanskih plemen in kulture afriških priseljencev iz časa kolonialnega trgovanja s sužnji. Brazilska arhitektura se močno razlikuje od latinskoameriške v celoti in je raznolika znotraj sebe.

Modernist architecture and its heir, contemporary Brazilian architecture, are the consequences of complex historical and cultural processes in which native and immigrant architects either contributed to overcoming the established models and standards brought over from Europe or fostered native Indian heritage and African heritage from the age of colonial slave trade.
