Malo tko u Hrvatskoj zna da je prije trideset godina u podrumskoj prostoriji u Mesničkoj 12 u Zagrebu postavljena izložba dvadesetoro umjetnika, čime je službeno s radom započela galerija Podroom. Bilo je to 24. svibnja 1978., izložba se zvala "Za umjetnost u umu", a okupila je neformalnu skupinu
umjetnika koja će se uskoro, prigodom budućih zajedničkih istupa u javnosti, služiti imenom Radna zajednica umjetnika (skraćeno RZU). Samo stotinjak metara zračne linije zapadno od Galerije suvremene umjetnosti (smještene na Katarinskom trgu 2) Podroom je okupljao istomišljenike koji su željeli "uzeti stvar u svoje ruke".

Few people in Croatia know that thirty years ago an exhibition of twenty artists was displayed in a cellar at Mesnička Street 12 in Zagreb, thus marking the formal opening of the gallery called the ‘Podroom’ (The Cellar). The date was 24 May 1978. The exhibition was entitled "For Art in the Mind"and it gathered an informal group of artists who would soon, in view of their future joint public appearances, use the name Radna Zajednica Umjetnika (RZU – "Working Community of Artists"). Only about a hundred metres due west of the Gallery of Contemporary
Art (situated at St. Catherine’s Square 2), the Podroom gathered like-minded artists who wanted to "take matters into their own hands".
